Annoyances : Yahoo! home page

Submitted by DA on Monday, 18 December 20062 Comments

Ever since Yahoo! has updated the design and layout of its home page, there is one area that has really pissed me off. Its on the right side of the page to display Mail, Messenger, Weather etc for the signed in user profile. Reason is the pathetically slow and irritating animation to open the tabs on Mouse Over and the worst part, it doesn’t do what its supposed to do. Guys comeon we all know what Tabs are and how they work. One is supposed to click on them and their state should remain persistent till the user changes it. Yeah AJAX is cool but one should not underestimate the stress it puts when every time a user would move the mose over the tabs intentionally or un-intentionally and the page would start to fetch the info from the servers. These tabs would crunch your servers big time. You are better off with persistent tabs which would cache the required info and stay that way.
Just in case, I am a not US resident user, so maybe this might all be ok for US users.

1. Mail tab doesn’t work, even if I have just signed in

2. Horoscopes, seriously why would you want to have this? Let us customize this area and replace it with Sports results, or market indices etc.

3. Weather, now I remember pretty well that I did set my preferred city half an hour ago and still zilch

4. Messenger, ok maybe this might be working as none of my contacts were online at the time

5. Radio, why oh why…get a life. Need more useful info here

6. Local, well doesn’t bother me as I am a Non-US user so maybe it might work for US residents

Yahoo hasn’t done anything new for a very long time. They’re just buying other products like flickr and not utilizing them properly.

I actually love this. When I sign-in, it shows a preview of my inbox. And the weather and horoscopes come in handy and remember my settings. The local, messenger, and radio do not apply. But in today’s world, it would be nice to at least customize this space with widgets. Right?
