einstein fish riddle

It took me 10 minutes….lets see how well you guys can do it.

There are no tricks, just pure logic, so good luck and don’t give up.

1. In a street there are five houses, painted five different colours.
2. In each house lives a person of different nationality
3. These five homeowners each drink a different kind of beverage, smoke different brand of cigar and keep a different pet.

THE QUESTION: WHO OWNS THE FISH?

HINTS

1. The Brit lives in a red house.
2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
3. The Dane drinks tea.
4. The Green house is next to, and on the left of the White house.
5. The owner of the Green house drinks coffee.
6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.
7. The owner of the Yellow house smokes Dunhill.
8. The man living in the centre house drinks milk.
9. The Norwegian lives in the first house.
10. The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
12. The man who smokes Blue Master drinks beer.
13. The German smokes Prince.
14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
15. The man who smokes Blends has a neighbour who drinks water.

ALBERT EINSTEIN WROTE THIS RIDDLE EARLY DURING THE 19th CENTURY. HE SAID THAT 98% OF THE WORLD POPULATION WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SOLVE IT.

My reasoning:

- The norweigen is in the first house, the blue house is the second house, and the middle house drinks milk

- Now because the green house drinks coffe and is left from the white house, it has to be the fourth house, making the white house the fifth house

- Next, because the norweigen is in the first house, the red house, which holds the brit, has to be the third house, making the first house the yellow house

- The yellow house smokes Dunhill, making the blue house with the horse

Now for the hard part…

- The person who smokes blends is next to cats, and also water, and house number one (the yellow house)can only drink water, or have a cat as a pet, also having house number two the house to smoke Blends, also that house number one’s pet must be the cat

* Yellow house is complete

- Now, looking back, house number two (blue house) must be the house that has the Dane, and drinks Tea

* Blue house is complete

- now that some things are eliminated, house number three (the red house) must have birds as a pet, and smoke pall mall

* Red house is complete

we’re narrowing it down…

- now, this means that house number five (the white house) must drink beer, and smoke blue masters, and has to be the sweden, and have a dog as a pet

* White house is complete

- this means that the fourth house (the green house) is german, smokes prince, and has the fish as a pet
