Need help: Plasma or LCD?

Submitted by DA on Sunday, 11 November 2007View Comments

Plasma or LCD

Plasma or LCD seems to be question of this decade. This brings back the memories of BETAMAX vs VHS and another one from todays, the so called HD vs BlueRay. Anyways, I have been window shopping for a flatone for some days now and have come across some very beautiful [performance wise], some dumb, and some questionable products/brands so far.

Since I am from IT background, that doesn’t automatically make me the Mr Know-it-all about Plasma vs LCD. I do know that both have their pluses and  minuses, but hey I rather talk to the community about their first hand experiences also.

So far on my pluses list is Panasonic 42″ [KD 350.00 + China made + Free home theater]  or Panasonic 50″ [KD 599.000 + Singapore + DVD Recorder].

So guys whats your take on this issue and comment/vote in  your preferences:

SONY is only the name!!!! Everyone talks about Sony. The fact of the matter is there are many other names who manufacture LCD & Plasma better than Sony.

Just check out the real innovators of LCD = SHARP Corp.
    Check out = HITACHI

These are much more advanced than Sony I bet.

@mavrick: Both Alghanim and Panasonic [Yousifi] are offering this deal. Although I suggest you look at new LCD's from Panasonic too, they support 2 mega-pixel and are priced at around KD 500.000/- at Alghanim.

@Bashar: Thx mate for the valuable input, sure Sony has stood out from rest of the products in terms of quality and durability. But again thats higher budget area. Hopefully I will get Sony when the prices lower down.

@Menta: Panasonic is offering either table stand or wall bracket but not both
  • Please do check if Panasonic is offering the wall mount brackets or Table stand along with the Plasma. I heard from a very good source, that these have to bought separately.
  • Even though numbers so far could suggest Plasma, and Plasmas might have kind of longer life span, given that the gas can be refilled in the future, while LCD is crystal based and if a crystal fails, there it goes. Also, I heard the quality of picture degrades gradually over the years. This might be true for both types also.

But for me, when I was shopping, I always felt LCD has a sharper image and better quality. Without looking at any numbers, stare at the two and see what you feel like it. I got second opinion on it from someone who doesn't know the different, he also chose LCD. They used to say LCD image will scramble during soccer matches or fast action movie, but I think this is with the old days or bad brands. I have Sony Bravia and never had any such issues. Also, Plasmas suffer from score print, meaning if you play games, or watch lots of soccer where some part of the screen remain the same for long time, after you change channel the print of the score might remain for sometime. So if you are a gamer, don't go Plasma.

Regardless of your choice, make sure it has HDMI and several ports, find the best place for it otherwise you will lose its beauty. Get proper surround system and subwoofer with it. I got Sony Bravia and it's surround system. Expensive, but pretty good.

    Good luck
