Masala Tuna

Cooking is fun and relaxing for me. Kind of takes out the stress factor. Here is my homegrown recipe for masala tuna. Tuna can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, be it with bread [preferably brown/multi grain], or rice, or spaghetti, or with good salad. Remember this recipe involves a mix of some basic Indian spices which are easily available, and canned tuna in olive oil. There are varieties of tuna available in sunflower oil and water but stay away from those. The best part about tuna in olive oil is you can use the oil in the can for cooking.

Ingredients for masala tuna:

1 can of tuna [olive oil]
1 medium tomato diced
2 medium onions diced
1 green chilly sliced/diced
1 cup of garden peas
1 cup of fresh coriander
1/2 cup of water

1/2 teaspoon red chilly powder
1 tablespoon of coriander powder
1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon of Garam Masala
1 tablespoon Ginger & Garlic paste
Salt to taste

optional
Tomato pury
Worcestershire sauce

  1. Pour the oil in a non-stick pot or wok and heat on medium
  2. Add a piece of onion, if it crackles, add rest of diced onions in the pot
  3. Let the onions cook for a while, don’t forget to stir or the onions will stick and burn
  4. Once the onions turn translucent/brown add 1 tablespoon of ginger/garlic paste and keep stiring
  5. Add red chilly powder, pinch of turmeric, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt. Stir well so the onions are coated well with the masala
  6. Add the diced tomatoes now and stir well again for about a minute
  7. Pour in the 1/2 cup of water, stir and cover the pot. This will allow the tomatoes to soften up. Leave it to simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Once the gravy is ready, add green chilly and garden peas
  9. Now take a kitchen knife or a fork and slice through the tuna chunks in the can and add it to the pot
  10. Stir the tuna well and keep it on medium heat. The idea is to let the water in the pot dry up.
  11. Now if you like a bit of color, add some tomato pury in the mix, and stir well
  12. You may also add a dash of Worcestershire sauce if you fancy a bit of extra flavor
  13. Let the water in tuna dry up, this may also burn the tuna meat a bit, but that gives a great flavor
  14. Take out the tuna in a serving dish and add a dash of fresh coriander for seasoning
  15. Serve with rice/ bread/ spaghetti/ salad
