Do Asians receive harassing treatment in Kuwait? This may seem like a simple question but the answer is more simpler. Unless we live in stone ages its not hard to explain how true such a statement is, and this would be accurate and fair.

I have received this question on several occasions, either as a complaint or as an opinion, by numerous Asians. How true is this statement? What do Asians have that makes them earn more under-privilege status? Is it fair to generalize this thinking to all Asian here? I don’t need to talk about this to anyone as I have witnessed enough horror stories from many Asians in this country.

We have to realize that Asians come from Third World countries. Their countries don’t send them to an unknown place, but they leave their home to venture, to earn for their poor families back home, and definitely they have no clue what and how much they will get in return. Their countries don’t care about the welfare of any citizen abroad and their embassies usually stay alert to assist and serve them in case of emergencies by getting them deported in snap.

Asians enjoy lots of company in their accommodations, they enjoy more than average occupancy of 6-10 people living in single room, it always makes them feel more secure.They don’t have to be in contact with the local police and various authorities here in Kuwait, because they [Asians], get picked up randomly by these authorities for no particular reasons and at no particular times. This is a common feeling, but why is that, and do they deserve this? [You can judge that wisely]

Mr X, a Non-Asian man who runs a company in Iraq [with head office here], has some Asian employees. He had an interesting view and he admitted that he gave special treatment to his Asian employees but not because of their dark skin or pale eyes, but because of their cheap labor costs. “Asians will not leave their countries unless they are certain that back home they will die along with their families for lack of employment or corruption. All they ask for in return are measly salary and chance to contact their families once in a while before coming to Kuwait,” Mr X noted

Mr X pointed out that they (Asians) don’t need training over fluency in foreign languages or typing [because most of them are considered illiterate] and don’t mind unending long hours of slave labor. He said that is why they deserve this treatment because they are worthless and know what to do [slog for hours and hours without pay guarantee]

But a Westerner lady sent me an email with an opposite view saying that in Kuwait, Asians receive better treatment and enjoy many facilities which they don’t deserve. According to her, these Asians are like parasites and they live and breed in every possible gutter like shelter they can find. Where as us Westerners have to worry about so many things in our accommodations like if there is swimming pool, cable tv, internet facilities, maid rooms, sea views, and cars, free insurance, medicals, paid education for children in Western schools..etc etc.. before we come to Kuwait. Westerners have to pay such a premium on booze here, or alternatively sneak into embassies for happy hours, yet many of these Asians reap the benefits of home made stuff. She also said that Asian countries usually provide better lifestyles [like living under a shaded tree not scorching hot sun] and career choices [like pulling lorries of heavy goods manually, begging for food and money] so why would these people leave their homeland to come to Kuwait. She noted that maybe these Asians couldn’t make it in their own country, thus they came here.

So for this lady, the Asians that come to Kuwait are Asians that are unable to find a job in their homeland and seek other opportunities here. Their desperation is their ticket to menial jobs here and their nationality helps them to enjoy many under-privileges which they would never get if they were Westerners.

Asian expatriates who are very dark-skin in origin had an interesting view over this matter. One such Asian of very dark-skin descent stated, “Dark skinned Asians are treated worse here in Kuwait. I’m an Asian but I look like an ethnic African [no offense] so I ‘m always checked at checkpoints. But if my (tan skinned) co-workers are driving, we are let through the check points. If I am with more than 3 people in my car, then thats calling for trouble, as I would automatically be considered an illegal transporter. And if my dark skinned friends are with females, the police just beat the crap out of them and throw them in jail as they must be pimps and prostitutes. So yes, I agree that most dark Asians have it a lot worse here in Kuwait.”

I believe that most Asians here are very scared of the country’s laws and regulations rather than other nationalities, including many Arab citizens. Those who don’t break the law always admit to breaking the law after a night of 5 star treatment, and it seems normal to ask their embassy for support instead of trying to get a wasta (influential backer) to cover up their innocence because the embassies have blazingly fast deportation procedures for such embarrassments.

In conclusion, I believe most Asians occupy a certain post not because of desperation, misfortunes, hard labor but because of their vulnerability.
