Switch Now!! Friggin Amazin Kubuntu!!!

Damn am in love with my Kubuntu distro. What the hell was I in for with Windows ?! No offense but Vista to Batista it would take eternity to catch up with the FOSS [free n open source software]. The speed, performance, accessibility to softwares [total free stuff], updates, upgrades etc is amazin!
Both Ubuntu and Kubuntu are from same roots, they branch out with differences in Display Managers and apps, but under the hood its all the same fantabolous Linux kernel. Its been 3 days and I am bloody addicted to the distro. Am upgrading to KDE 3.5.5 as I blog this entry. Got everything working on my Acer Aspire 1640 laptop. The issues I faced initially was with display 1280×800 but there is a nifty app which solved that issue. Other than that the only outstanding issue is now to get my Wataniya Air-Card working with Kubuntu. Got it working initially but the bloody thing cuts off every 2mins. Bluetooth is working fine.
One thing that I would like to add is that its geek-zone when setting up Kubuntu to work properly with some of the hardware issues and it might take n00b some time to get used to filesystem, naming conventions, and command line interface. Thanks to my university sessions on Unix, the installation, upgrades from command line have been a breeze for me.
Any one interested in deploying distro, feel free to get in touch with me if you face any issues in installation and config. Will meet you guys today at the bloggers meet-up.

You said: “I faced initially was with display 1280×800 but there is a nifty app which solved that issue.” What is that nifty app that you used? I am uisng Ubuntu, and everything works great except that I can’t change the screen rsolution (maybe because I am using an older Dell latitude test machine I found in the office). By the way, have you tried Xubuntu? It’s a lighter version of Ubuntu designed for older machines. It is really fast.
Dagger: My laptop has Intel915 chipset, so I had to download 915resolution package. And a tweak had to be added in my xorg.conf to allow the display for 1280×800. Also had to add 915resolution initialization in my startup scripts.Check my Kubuntu page from the menu above for details.

Sounds cool.
Been thinking of converting to Fedora red hat on my windows xp laptop but I’ve been stalling since OS X does everything pretty well. Maybe I’d skip fedora and try kubuntu instead. :thumbs up:
I’ve got both XP SP2 and Ubuntu. Dual booting seems pointless right now because I haven’t booted into XP for a month now ever since I perfected the ubuntu installation. Hardware, especially stuff like wireless usb dongles and in your case the wataniya aircard can be tough to crack, but there’s always google and other people who faced the same installation problems.
Only thing keeping me from deleting XP altogether is Steam. It ‘works’ using wine but not as fast and/or stable. If only they released a native linux version…
In any case, enjoy!
also, try XGL + Beryl. Amazing eye candy, and in my case it’s more stable than Compiz, altho I’m not so sure how it’d perform on a 915. Works fantastically here on a Geforce 6600.
That’s great work you’ve done.
I’ve been a linux fan for quite sometime. I’d 1st worked on Ubuntu about a year back. I loved its ease of use. Performance bets windows xp any day.
I’d downloaded edubuntu (ubuntu with an Education twist in it) – the PPC version. Hoping to get an old g3 400mhz imac (all-in-one) and install it with edubuntu for my kids to use and learn.
Of course, I’m not into the techs of linux but learn & discover things through forums and various information off the net.
Congratualtions once again… I was hoping Linux get spread in Kuwait and windows becomes a thing of the past…
