Wataniya W-Net HSDPA : Not again…

Wataniya launched its new HSDPA network this week. From the looks of it, this seems another trap just like Wataniya W-Net Card [ read previous post ]. Also why would anyone bother buying such an expensive service when regular DSL is available at nearly half the price. Their argument may be mobility, but seriously, why don’t they make the entire city Wi-Fi enabled and charge less. Wataniya we wonder what will happen to your mega-investment?
Facts:
-
Speeds exceeding 512 KBps
-
Router connected to power socket
-
Has SIM card attached to router
-
Router will be a hot-spot for upto 10 simultaneous connections
-
Deposit KD 130 [probably non-refundable]
-
Monthly charges KD 23.5 to KD 28 during promo
-
Normal charges KD 40

Just for the record, Wataniya HSDPA is the same as Wataniya W-Net Card (Sierra 850). I have been using the HSDPA network for some time on their W-Net card. The service is actually quite good and rivals most ISPs 256 and 512 connections.
The people who would purchase this service are the following:
1. People that visit multiple locations (Home, Work, Chalet); this would save them money instead of getting three seperate connections.
2. People in remote areas without access to DSL.
3. People who want to have fast internet on the move.
The cost and investment for making Kuwait Wi-Fi capable would be astronomical and not cost effective. Not to mention WiFi would have a very hard time sending signal within our three-story cement homes. The choice to enable HSDPA on their network is part of a stepping stone to newer faster networks; This is all part of the path to 4G.
I’m stuck in an asshole building that the owner doesnt want to fix the telephone lines, we pay over 450 KD per month rent and he doesnt fix anything!!!
So my neigbour got this wataniya internet service for 28 KD per month. It is quite amazing. You can get 80 kbps download speeds when downloading a file from the internet. This is two times faster than the average Quality Net’s DSL.
DSL in Kuwait is sooo crap, in the UK you can get 16,000 kbps internet for half the price than 512 kbps in Kuwait.
I’m sad about the bloody telephone lines. God help us.
