Im sorry to butt in but I’ve seen the pictures before, at that time it was said to be images of home of a top Indian movie star (Shahrukh Khan) so though I guess though that idiot Mugabe would be living in style while the poor people of Zimbabwe remain famished, these pics are not of his house, and have been doing circles of emails for a long time under differnt names.

While there is a strong possibility the photos aren’t of the interior of Mugabe’s palace the fact remains he has built a very substantial mansion for his own edification. The productive people of Zimbabwe, the professional people such as medicos, nurses, engineers, etc have all fled to more honestly governed countries.

At least the South African unionists had the balls to veto the unloading of the Chinese arms shipment; doesn’t say much for Mbeki and his SA govenment’s gutless approach. Mozambique deserves credit for refusing to let the ship enter their waters. The ship is now headed for Angola so we’ll see whether Angola takes a similar approach and shows that Africans actually care about Africans.
As for the Chinese, they are a totally discredited lot, supplying arms to criminals, raping Tibet and trying to destroy minority cultures in the western area of central Asia.

Laura, the majority of Sub-saharan African countries were left with viable, or potentially viable, economies when the “colonialists” left them to govern themselves. I exclude those colonised by the Belgians and Portugese, all they left were big messes.
They, the Africans, have reverted to tribalism and the expectation someone owes them. Well, no one owes them a damn thing. They have to get off their black arses and start treating each other as fellow human beings, grow their own food and develop the continent’s abundant mineral wealth. Firstly however, the people have to show they really want get rid of their ratbag tyrants, ie, Mugabge and his co-criminals.
Secondly, the dominant economic and military country in southern Africa, Sth Africa, has to start showing some leadership and compassion for those who have sought refuge there.
If you feel so moved to to do something “selfless” by all means go to Africa and try to make a difference. Persuade the Sth African leadership that AIDS needs proper medicines; that looting Zimbabwe farms doesn’t produce desperately needed food; that the people of Darfur shouldn’t be targets for the Somali military etc.
Just don’t expect outsiders to impose solutions; the loss of one Aussie life, or US, or Brit, or Canadian, or Kiwi, or any other for that matter, would be a far too higher price to pay.

It’s not, it’s about the perversion of an electoral system which should give the majority the right to decide their personal futures and, collectively, the future of their country. The Commonwealth imposed sanctions against Smith and worked to hard over control to an elected black majority government so let’s cut the crap about “whiteees”. Smith’s regime had very little to recommend it but it offered more financial stability, more food, better infrastructure, better medical facilities etc than this corrupt, murderous Mugabe gang. These thugs have reduced Zimbabwean life expectancy to the lowest in Africa; murder of political rivals has become standard practice and the ongoing willful destruction of the nation’s ability to feed itself is apparent to any intelligent observer. There’s nothing racist in reporting the truth; it is simply a matter of concern for fellow human beings. Those human beings however have to show a willingness to help themselves, assisted by other African countries as outside assistance from, you guessed it, “white” people, will only be rejected as paternalisim and racism.
