WTF: Microsoft on how to wrap text around image in Powerpoint 2007?!

Submitted by DA on Wednesday, 14 January 2009View Comments

Oh the collective wisdom of Microsoft never stops from amazing me! Read this article on how to wrap text around images in Powerpoint 2007. Yep its Powerpoint 2007!! They should have, instead of giving the ‘spaced’ out, solution just said…’No we cant do that’. An entire page dedicated to breaking our wits and ego by tapping space-bar. And consider this…as if that was not insult enough, they go about telling you how to do that with irregular images too! Microsoft you rule the all the bases.

Read Microsoft’s solution here [LINK]

I am so glad I’m not the only one who said WTF. It reminded me of this: http://weblogs.asp.net/alex_papadimoulis/archive/2005/11/13/430478.aspx

I submitted a comment on the official MS website where they ask if the help page was helpful to me. I’m glad I’m not the only one thinking, WTF to this help. I mean, I can do it easily in Word, why not PowerPoint?!?

Wow, this is absolute BS. I’m surprised this hasn’t been noticed that much, although that’s what MS was probably counting on.

Good to know I’m not the only one unhappy about this.

I teach PowerPoint to high school students and I get this question often. They look at me like I’m joking when I tell them there is not built in functionality and they will need to construct well placed text boxes.

I wonder if the 2010 beta addressed this?

I figured if I googled this that I’d get to a blog like this. That’s hilarious, I thought the same thing when I went to make a nice little text wrap around a professional looking presentation. I was like “are you kidding me?” Anyway, thanks for your post, LOL

Chock another WTF here. I can’t believe that this basic functionality isn’t included.

So, it would easy to make different size text boxes around an object and just overflow one box into another, great.. Oh yeah, that functionality doesn’t exist either…

After I join the rest of you in cursing, how can I get my job done?

The project I’m doing is for a nonprofit group – we’re trying to do an “online ad journal” in place of the kind of fundraising tribute journal that usually gets printed and distributed at charity benefit dinners. I was thinking that each page would have a photo filling 1/4 of the page, and then text in up to 3/4 of the page.

Can someone help me understand what I can and can’t do here? I’m new to Powerpoint. Let’s say I want to follow their directions.

    1) How can I make text boxes of fixed sizes, that don’t change size when I add or subtract text? When people have paid for ads for part of a page, we want to give each donor and equal area on the page.

    2) For a full-page ad, can I set it so text flows from one text box to another, or does this “manual” method require us to figure out where the text in one box ends and the text in another begins?

The suggestion of doing it in Word and making a screenshot sounds interesting! Any suggestions on how to lay out the Word page so the screenshot will fit correctly in a powerpoint slide? I also want to include a background.

    Thanks!

    Harriet

    hey Harriet,
probably you got me wrong sorry. My suggestion of the screenshot was just provocative, a solution even worst of what MSN suggested.
But why you want to use PowerPoint for your “online ad journal”? (by the way what is an “online ad journal”)?

Regarding your questions, please select the text box you want, right click on it with the mouse and in the menu that appears choose at the bottom “Format shape”. Click on last item on the left on “Text Box”. Here you have your answers, just make some tries

I was searching for a solution to wrap text in powerpoint and came across the same “help” (if you can call it that) article… same response as you guys. I was still searching with fingers crossed, hoping someone else would have a solution out there, but considering the comments here, I’m guessing there isn’t. FML.
